Thought to be extinct in the Cretaceous Period 65 million years ago, Coelacanths are often known by their moniker “Living Fossil.” A lobe-finned fish whose relatives were only known from fossils until two modern species were discovered in 1938 off the coast of South Africa and later in Indonesia. Both types of modern Coelacanth are extremely rare and considered critically endangered.
